Spelling and Grammar on your blog

August 6, 2010 How To

Day 19′s challenge is to make an opinion post. I tend to try to not make my posts very opinionated, but there is something that has really been bothering me lately on many blogs I have read… so this post is both an opinion and something to help professional bloggers.

Bad spelling and grammar on a blog are extremely annoying.

I will admit that I am am horrible at spelling. To remedy that, I use spell-check on all my posts, and reread posts after spell-checking to make sure no words have been changed to the wrong words. I figure it is the least I can do for my readers. Sadly it seems many people do not seem to think their readers are worth this small courtesy, as I have seen many blogs lately with awful spelling and absolutely horrible grammar.

A few of the blogs I’ve seen were not from native English speakers, and that’s understandable. If you’re just doing a blog for fun, you’re not going to go through the trouble of finding a native English speaker to edit each post. So I’ll let those slide. But what I can’t let slide are the many blogs by native English speakers (especially parents) filled with atrocious grammar. I’ve seen both professional and hobby blogs with this problem, and it greatly annoys me, because it means two things; either they never learned to properly use grammar (which, if they’re parents, means their children likely won’t either), or they are too lazy to care.

When trying to make money online it is especially important to not be one of those two types of people. If you’re horrible at grammar, have a friend read over your posts and professional emails before you post or send them. Look at every mistake you make and figure out why it is wrong. Always use spell check, and always reread before posting.

About.com has some great English grammar resources if you need some improvement.

I couldn’t agree more. What kills me is when so-called professional bloggers, or bloggers featured on high profile sites, are terrible writers. Or you’ll read on a blog that the writer is going to publish a book. I have no problem with casual language, and of course we all have the occasional typo, but if a blog is terribly written, it isn’t worth my time.

    I concur!

That said, I almost always seem to manage one typo or cognate in every post. Then there are the comments — if I click “submit” before I proof read I can come across as a total idiot rather than a literate and educated communicator.

  3. [...] first is horrible grammar, which I ranted about nicely here. Texting and internet shorthand have supposedly destroyed this generation’s ability to use [...]

I agree 100%. I am a little anal about spelling and grammar, although I am not perfect! But it is true, especially if you are looking to make money from your blog. Stopping by from 31DBBB! :)

  5. I’m the official spellchecker/grammar checker of the family which was great before I started blogging, but now it seems I need to check each post AT LEAST 4 times before I hit publish or risk hubby and kids laughing at me!
